withhold certain highway funds if a State does not comply with certain
requirements in issuing a driver’s license or identification card, and
for other purposes.
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Mr.
GALLEGLY (for himself, Mr. BILBRAY, and Mr. BARTLETT) introduced the
following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Transportation
and Infrastructure, and in addition to the Committee on Oversight and
Government Reform, for a period to be subsequently determined by the
Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall
within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned

Louisiana becomes 21st state to reject REAL ID |

On July 8, 2008, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindall signed HB 715, "Directs the Department of Public Safety and Corrections not to implement the federal REAL ID Act of 2005." The new law also requires that the department "report to the governor any attempt by agencies or agents of the United States Department of Homeland Security to secure the implementation of the REAL ID Act through the operations of that division and department."

In an updated story by the Associated Press, Michael Chertoff, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, (DHS) granted the state of South Carolina an extension on its compliance with REAL ID six hours after Governor Sanford announced he would not comply with the program. Governor Sanford also wrote a letter to Secretary Chertoff, explaining his position.
